How to find what percent one number is of another
Divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100.
part ÷ whole × 100
Examples
- You scored 42 out of 60 on a test. 42 ÷ 60 × 100 = 70%.
- 12 of 80 people said yes. 12 ÷ 80 × 100 = 15%.
- You have saved 300 toward a goal of 1,200. 300 ÷ 1,200 × 100 = 25%.
Working out a grade
Divide the points you earned by the total points available, then multiply by 100. If a test has several parts, add up the points from every part first and use those totals as the part and the whole.
Common questions
How do I work out my grade as a percentage?
Divide your points by the total points possible and multiply by 100. Scoring 45 out of 50 is 45 ÷ 50 × 100 = 90%.
Can the part be bigger than the whole?
Yes. If the part is larger than the whole, the answer is over 100%. For example, 150 is 150% of 100.
Why can't the whole be zero?
The calculation divides by the whole, and dividing by zero has no answer.
